With an ocular lens used in routine clinical diagnostics, mobile devices such as smartphones or tablets can be used for medical examinations. Matthias Maurer took pictures of his retina on the ISS to detect Spaceflight-Associated Neuro-Ocular Syndrome (SANS). For this purpose, any changes in his eyes as well as his eye movements were recorded, examined and evaluated. These videos were then transferred to mobile devices to test and train AI models to automatically detect any retinal changes in astronauts in the future.
