Operational space support: satellite communications, reconnaissance, geoinformation

In modern military operations, every second counts. Information must be generated, processed and transmitted quickly and securely. It contributes to a real-time situational picture and the networking of armed forces, playing a decisive role in the success of the highly digitalised operations of today and tomorrow. Within the Bundeswehr, the Cyber and Information Domain Service (Cyber- und Informationsraum; CIR) provides the essential core capability for this: space support to operations.

This encompasses communications, reconnaissance and the geoinformation service – three satellite-based services that are fundamental to the Bundeswehr’s command and control capabilities and information superiority. They enable the armed forces to exchange voice and data, detect threats at an early stage, provide critical intelligence on factors such as weather and terrain, and support navigation. To deliver these services, the Bundeswehr relies on both its own satellites and those of civilian partners.

One such partner is DLR – for example through the joint Heinrich Hertz mission. At ILA 2026, visitors will have the opportunity to gain insights into this example of civil-military cooperation at the DLR stand. Using an interactive model, we provide a clear explanation of how mission support from space works: how satellites are positioned in orbit, what tasks they perform, how they operate and how they transmit data – for example to ground stations, vehicles and personnel. The Bundeswehr makes an important contribution to Germany’s whole-of-government, operationally ready and resilient space architecture, and will continue to expand and develop its capabilities over the coming years in a targeted manner.
