SUMMARY:5th International Workshop on Carnot Batteries (IWCB)
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 5th International Workshop on Carnot Batteries!\nThe cost-effective and site-independent storage of electrical energy at the scale of a large city‘s daily consumption is crucial for the integration of renewable energy into a sustainable future energy system. Solving this challenge is of great importance for our society. \n\n\nCarnot Batteries are an emerging technology for cost-effective and location-independent storage of electric energy on a gigawatt-hour scale. Although current pilot projects are primarily limited to the megawatt-hour range\, the technology’s inherent scalability — where storage capacity can be increased simply by adding low-cost thermal mass — makes it ideal for the long-duration-storage at a municipal scale. \nBy converting electricity into heat\, storing the heat in low-cost storage media such as water or molten salt\, and converting the heat back to electricity when needed\, the Carnot Battery is economically and environmentally friendly and has the potential to solve the global storage problem for renewable electricity. \nIn addition to their role as large-scale energy storage systems\, Carnot Batteries also offer significant potential for cogeneration of heat and power. By utilizing part of the stored thermal energy directly for heating or industrial processes\, overall system efficiency can be substantially increased. This combined use of electricity and heat makes Carnot Batteries a versatile solution for both energy storage and sector coupling in future sustainable energy systems. \nThe 5th International Workshop on Carnot Batteries will bring together experts in energy storage to discuss the latest research and demonstration of Carnot Batteries. The two-day lecture programme will provide a comprehensive overview of innovative research approaches\, covering various Carnot Battery concepts\, their demonstration\, and integration into the power grid and sector coupling. Speakers from both science and industry have already confirmed their participation. The workshop is an international platform for the presentation and international visibility of the latest results in Carnot Battery research. \nCALL FOR ABSTRACTS: A submission of an abstract is possible until 11 May 2026. \nMore information can be found here: iwcb2026.welcome-manager.de  \nWe will be happy to welcome you in Stuttgart in September 2026. \nThe IWCB 2026 Organizing Committee\nDLR | KIT | University of Stuttgart
