DESCRIPTION:Picture: Vadim Sadovski \n  \nFifty years after Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin set foot on the Moon\, a major exhibition at the Heinz Nixdorf MuseumsForum (HNF) in Paderborn will chart the conquest of space. Running from 5 July 2019 to 19 April 2020\, the exhibition titled “Aufbruch ins All” (“Breakup into Space”) will whisk visitors away on an adventurous journey through time and space. Spread over 800 square metres\, the exhibition is set against an awe-inspiring backdrop of darkness\, planets and space vehicles. In addition to historical and technological exhibits such as robots\, propulsion systems and control modules\, models of rockets or the International Space Station (ISS) will illustrate how humankind has ventured forth into the Universe. \nVisitors will be able to take a seat in a replica of the Apollo 17 lunar module to enjoy a virtual drive across the Moon. A virtual reality tour will let them explore the ISS and conduct a docking manoeuvre lying down in a reconstructed Soyuz capsule. They will also have the chance to take a selfie as astronauts and to discover the layers of a spacesuit using an augmented reality application. Many of the interactive exhibits have been specially created and provide a unique experience of space. There will be a Lunar Lander Land playground for children\, where they will be able to weigh planets\, leave their footprint in ‘lunar dust’ and clamber through a moon landing craft. \nThis exhibition was designed by HNF in cooperation with the DLR Space Administration. Admission to the exhibition will cost €5.00\, with reduced tickets available for €3.00. A family ticket will cost €10.00 and will include access to the permanent exhibition. Guided tours will be organised for groups and there will be a series of talks catering to aerospace and astronomy enthusiasts.

SUMMARY:„Energiewendemärchen – Drei Weihnachtsgeschichten für Unzufriedene“
DESCRIPTION:Wir laden Sie herzlich ein zur ersten Weihnachtsvorlesung des Deutschen Zentrums für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR) am Standort Stuttgart. Gemeinsam wollen wir uns jedes Jahr auf verständliche wie unterhaltsame Weise einem spannenden Thema aus dem Kosmos der DLR-Forschungsarbeiten nähern – ganz in der Tradition der öffentlichen britischen Christmas Lectures\, die der englische Naturforscher und Physiker Michael Faraday Mitte des 19. Jahrhunderts an der Royal Institution ins Leben rief und die heute ein Millionenpublikum im Fernsehen begeistern. \nWeihnachtszeit ist Märchenzeit – passend dazu nimmt Prof. André Thess\, Direktor des DLR-Instituts für Technische Thermodynamik\, in seinem Vortrag „Energiewendemärchen“ kontroverse Themen rund um den Wandel unseres Energie- und Mobilitätssystems unter die Lupe. Ob „Der böse Verbrennungsmotor“ oder „Die billige Energiewende“ – André Thess legt den Wahrheitsgehalt populärer Argumentationsgebäude frei und zeigt\, dass es keine alternativlose Energie- und Klimapolitik geben kann. Auch „Das Gleichnis von den vielfältigen Bratpfannen“ wollen wir natürlich nicht für uns behalten\, sondern als Einführung mit Ihnen teilen. \nSchauen Sie dazu einfach bei uns vorbei\, lauschen den „Energiewendemärchen“ und diskutieren im Anschluss mit uns bei einem Schluck Glühwein und Plätzchen. \nWir freuen uns auf Ihr Kommen. \nDie Teilnahme an der Veranstaltung ist kostenlos\, allerdings bitten wir um Anmeldung bis zum 26. DESCRIPTION:The Institute of Materials Research of the German Aerospace Center (DLR) invites you to the annual Materials Colloquium on Tuesday\, 03 December 2019\, on the DLR campus in Cologne. \nMachine learning meets ab-initio simulation – A revolution in materials research? \nBig data\, artificial intelligence\, machine learning – we are used to talk about these technologies in the context of Factory of the Future and Industry 4.0. Since a quite short period of tuime\, however\, they sneak into the theater of material research\, mingle with digital tools like ab-initio simulation\, micro-scale materials simulation and high-throughput analysis to something which is now called materials informatics. And recently\, but hesitantly\, quantum computing jumps in\, threatening or rather promising to turn the way how to do materials research upside-down. This new arena of digital technologies creates thrilling opportunities but also distressing questions and uncertainties. \nIn the frame of our annual materials colloquium and together with renown experts we will light up the scene and work out scenarios of quantum machine learning based materials engineering. We look forward to a program of pace-making presentations and exciting discussions about the future of a digitalized materials research. Please register by 25 November 2019. DESCRIPTION:Picture:Vadim Sadovski \nSascha Skorupka\, physics and engineering\, Fulda University of Applied Sciences: Where does our knowledge about space come from? Astronomy from antiquity to the present day \nWe know roughly how heavy the Sun is\, how far away it is and with some precision\, its surface temperature. We also know the size of the galaxy we inhabit and that there is a gigantic black hole at its centre. We even know approximately how old our Universe is. People have been interested in the mysteries of the heavens and the Universe for millennia. Ideas about what space is and how it works have evolved over time. But how do we know all this? This talk gives an overview of the history of astronomy and explains what means we are using today to decipher the last mysteries of the Universe. \nThis series of talks accompanies the special exhibition ‘Departure to Universe! The Experience of Space Travel’\, which will be showcased at Heinz Nixdorf Museums Forum from 5 July 2019 to 5 January 2020. In a space covering 800 square metres\, visitors will be taken on an exciting voyage of discovery through space and time\, during which they will hear an account of the conquest of space by humans and experience it themselves via interactive stations. \n‘Departure to Universe!’ was conceived by HNF in cooperation with the DLR Space Administration.  \nAdmission to the talks is free. \n
