Where quanta become reality – quantum technologies at DLR
Wednesday, 2 April 2025, 09:45–11:00
What exactly are quanta? And what do they have to do with DLR, aerospace, energy, transport and security? On Space Day, visitors to Hannover Messe will gain an exciting insight into how DLR is at the forefront of research advancing quantum technologies and bringing them into real-world applications and commercial markets. Through short talks, interviews and panel discussions, DLR experts will provide an overview of the real-world impact of quantum technologies – ranging from high-tech sensors, tap-proof communication, ultra-precise navigation and novel computers with previously unknown capabilities.

At Hannover Messe 2025, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will provide insights into its latest research and present cutting-edge technologies, innovations and transfer projects (Future Hub, Hall 2, A48). Under the motto ‘At the edge of the possible – quantum technologies made by DLR’, and to mark the International Year of Quantum Science and Technology, DLR will focus on projects and missions that demonstrate how quantum technologies are opening up new frontiers for research, industry and business. Exhibits in this area will showcase, for example, advancements in future-oriented quantum sensors and satellite-based quantum encryption for secure communication. Additional highlights include developments in compact laser-optical clocks for satellite navigation systems and miniaturised, space-qualified quantum memories for a future satellite-based quantum network.
Quantum technologies – harnessing potential, securing leadership
DLR researches and develops quantum technologies across more than a dozen institutes in Germany, leveraging its unique expertise in the research fields of aeronautics, space, energy, transport and security. DLR’s goal is to harness quantum mechanical phenomena for practical applications, develop new technologies, identify key users and facilitate commercialisation. The DLR Quantum Computing Initiative (DLR QCI) will also be featured at the central DLR stand. The initiative is building a strong quantum computing ecosystem to accelerate technology transfer between industry and research, fostering collaborations and creating an attractive environment for skilled professionals. Across approximately 80 projects, DLR researchers, start-ups and industry are jointly developing quantum computers, essential technologies and real-world use cases, in order to bring quantum computing into practical use and ensure that Germany and Europe secure a leading international position in this field.
Start-up for the energy transition, aerogels as innovative materials and AI for railway infrastructure
Among the exhibitors at Hannover Messe 2025 is the DLR spin-off ‘heatbrAIn’. The young company will be demonstrating how artificial intelligence and geodata analysis can create the data foundation needed to simplify municipal heating planning. With heatbrAIn’s expertise, faster and improved feasibility studies and transformation plans can also be developed. DLR will also present its research on aerogels – extremely lightweight and porous carbon-based materials with a very unique nanostructure. These materials are suitable for many applications where conventional materials reach their limits, such as enhancing the efficiency and durability of battery systems. From its transport research, DLR will showcase how artificial intelligence can be used to reliably detect cracks in railway sleepers at an early stage – a critical step in improving the resilience of railway infrastructure in the future.
