Intelligent cooperative intersection for future urban traffic
The intersection of the future will act much smarter than it does today. New functions will ensure that traffic is managed more safely and efficiently, and in a more environmentally friendly way. Communications between vehicles and infrastructure, intelligent concepts for traffic light control and increased consideration for vulnerable road users (VRU), such as those travelling on foot or by bicycle, will play important roles.
For the live demonstration, DLR together with other partners, equipped an intersection (An der Verbindungsbahn/Rentzelstraße) on the test track for automated and connected driving (TAVF), located next to ITS World Congress, with innovative technologies. This includes the new VITAL approach for vehicle-actuated traffic light control, which will be demonstrated in live operation. This control can consider data from vehicle to infrastructure communication (V2X) for its decisions. In addition, advanced detection technology ensures that all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists, are recorded. These data serve as an input for the traffic light control. The DLR researchers and their partners will present live and on-site different approaches of innovative data detection and traffic light control.
