In case you wish to be waitlisted\, please send an email to Rebecca.Bartkowski@dlr.de. \n6. From the Moon to Mars – and beyond? \nHumankind has been captivated by the Moon from the earliest days. It is used as a basis for calendars and provides light during full moons\, and since time immemorial it has appeared an unattainable goal. But all this changed at the dawn of the space age. The orbiter Luna 3 managed to capture a first ‘rough’ view of the far side of the Moon in 1959. The sensation arrived in 1969\, when two humans set foot on the Moon for the first time. Fifty years later\, the Moon has once again become a destination for crewed missions. NASA intends to start building a space station in lunar orbit in 2020 (the Lunar Orbital Platform Gateway)\, and China plans to place astronauts and taikonauts on its surface from 2036 onwards. There are numerous projects for voyages to Mars in the period thereafter\, although they would be technologically difficult and financially exorbitant due to the length of the mission and the distance from Earth\, as well as presenting risks to the health of the astronauts. Missions to near-Earth asteroids are therefore being investigated as an interim solution. There are even plans to send crews to the icy moons of Jupiter and Saturn\, although doing so would present even greater risks than those mentioned above. There are also ethical issues (for instance: planetary protection) associated with dispatching humans to places that may be home to lifeforms. All of these issues will need to be resolved. \nDr.-Ing. Christian Gritzner (born 1966) studied aviation and aerospace at TU Berlin from 1986 to 1992. He then completed a doctorate with a thesis on asteroid defence concepts in 1996. After a variety of positions within the industrial sector\, in research and teaching\, Dr Gritzner has been research fellow at the DLR Space Administration in Bonn-Oberkassel since 2005. Originally assigned to the Ariane 5 programme\, in 2008 he moved to the Department of Extraterrestrial Physics\, where he is responsible for the ESA missions JUICE\, Herschel\, Mars Express and others\, as well as for the meteorological high-altitude research rockets. He has also been in charge of the Solar System Emissions sub-programme since 2016. \nThe event will be held at the Air Force Conference Centre\, Wahn Air Force Base. Information on how to enter the Base complex and the parking facilities will be published ahead of the event on www.dlr.de. \nFor more information on the topic of the Astro Seminar\, please contact Dr Manfred Gaida.

SUMMARY:{:de}12th International Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics{:}{:en}12th International Workshop on Subsecond Thermophysics{:}
DESCRIPTION:Bild: Dieter Jacobi / Köln Tourismus \nAbout the workshop \nThis will be the 12th of a series of well established workshops on experimental and theoretical aspects of thermophysical properties of matter. These workshops began more than 30 years ago as a forum of discussion of thermophysical property measurements based on subsecond techniques such as the exploding wire technique. The table below lists all previous workshops and the present one\, their hosting locations and their organizers. \nNowadays\, the workshop covers all aspects of thermophysical property research under extreme conditions\, such as high temperatures and pressures. The investigated timescale regimes reach from milliseconds to picoseconds\, including rapid resistive or inductive (volume) heating\, laser pulse heating\, levitation techniques on ground and under microgravity\, as well as other recently developed fast investigation techniques. The emphasis is on measurements of thermophysical properties at high temperatures and/or on the study of the behavior of matter under conditions close by and far away from thermodynamic equilibrium. \nThe workshop is held every three years. It has developed as a unique forum for scientists from different areas of thermophysics\, materials science and metrology where researchers can exchange knowledge\, ideas\, and experiences on the latest trends in the field. \nSince the 8th workshop\, the proceedings are published in the journal High Temperatures – High Pressures. \nThe 12th  IWSSTP will be organized by the Institut für Materialphysik im Weltraum\, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt (DLR)\, Köln\, Germany. \nOn behalf of the International Organizing Committee\, we are looking forward to welcoming you at our location. \n  \nImportant Dates \nFebruary 2018: 1st Call of papers \nSeptember 1\, 2018: 2nd Call\, Abstract submission opens\, Registration opens \nJanuary 14\, 2019: Deadline abstract submission \nFebruary 15\, 2019: Acceptance of abstracts \nMarch 15\, 2019: Participation fee due \nJune 3\, 2019: Workshop opening \nJune 6\, 2019: Workshop closing.

Radiation exposure in space \nLong-term space missions\, whether on a space station or as part of planned voyages to the Moon or Mars\, mean more than just physical and mental challenges for the astronauts: they are also associated with significant radiation exposure. On Earth\, the atmosphere offers a high degree of protection against cosmic rays. In contrast\, the exposure to cosmic radiation – consisting of galactic and solar components – during a quiet phase of the Sun exceeds terrestrial levels by several hundred times and can even become life-threatening during solar flares. \nWhile solar radiation on interplanetary missions can be effectively mitigated using suitable protection such as early-warning systems and the installation of protected rooms with increased screening\, these measures do not work against the high-energy component of galactic radiation. Implementation of radiation protection strategies and the associated calculation and minimisation of risks to astronauts – both of short and long-term damage – require precise measurement of the individual components within the radiation field and an exact analysis of their biological effects. \nDr Günther Reitz studied at the University of Frankfurt\, where he completed his Diplom in physics and then a doctorate in biophysics. Since 1972\, he has been working on measuring the radiation field in near-Earth and interplanetary space\, as well as on the surface of planets\, and on how individual radiation components affect biological systems. As scientific and technical director\, Günther Reitz has conducted studies during numerous experiments on Russian and US space missions and on the International Space Station since 1986. He accepted the position as Head of Department for Radiation Biology at the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine in 2004. In 2017\, he was appointed professor at the University of Suzhou in China\, where he supports the Institute for Aerospace Biology in the planning of space experiments. He has been director of a project for the interpretation and measurement of high-energy phenomena in Earth’s atmosphere at the Institute of Nuclear Physics in Prague since 2017. \n  \nThe event will be held at the Air Force Conference Centre\, Wahn Air Force Base. Information on how to enter the Base complex and the parking facilities will be published ahead of the event on www.dlr.de. \nFor more information on the topic of the Astro Seminar\, please contact Dr Manfred Gaida.

DESCRIPTION:Picture: NASA \n4. Crewed space flight returns to the Moon \nPlease note that all lectures of the 2019 Astroseminar are fully booked. Registration is no longer possible at this point. In case you wish to be waitlisted\, please send an email to Rebecca.Bartkowski@dlr.de. \n+++ Alternative Date (tbc): 22 may 2019 10:00 to 12:00 a.m. at Karl Rahner Akademie\, Jabachstraße 4-8\, 50676 Köln +++ \nThe first human set foot on the Moon in 1969\, following an unprecedented space race. Today – in a radically transformed\, global society – many protagonists around the world are making plans for a return to the Moon on robotic and crewed missions. In this new era of cooperative ventures\, ‘forward to the Moon’ – instead of ‘back to the Moon’ – would be the most fitting description. This talk will describe the shape of things to come. \nProfessor Johann-Dietrich Wörner\, born 1954\, is the current Director General of the European Space Agency (ESA). After graduating in civil engineering at TU Berlin\, he completed a doctorate at TU Darmstadt and was elected President of the University in 1995. Professor Wörner was Chair of the Executive Board at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) from March 2007 until June 2015\, before accepting the position of ESA Director General in July 2015. He also led the German delegation to ESA from 2007 to 2015 and served as Chairman of the ESA Council from 2012 to 2014. He has sat on national and international supervisory committees\, advisory boards and boards of trustees\, and was a member of the German government’s political energy programme\, known as PEPP. Professor Wörner has received many prizes and awards\, as well as numerous honorary doctorates from universities in the United States\, France\, Mongolia\, Russia and elsewhere.

Since the astronauts on the Apollo 11\, 14 and 15 missions placed laser reflectors on the surface of the Moon\, it has also been possible to measure its trajectory precisely and hence verify the Moon’s relativistic equation of motion. \nThe Earth and the Moon move around their shared centre of gravity\, which itself moves in the Sun’s gravitational field. The task of developing a theory of lunar motion that is consistent with observations has occupied astronomers since the earliest days of celestial mechanics. Measuring the Moon’s trajectory by means of lunar laser ranging has enabled scientists to verify the effects predicted by the theory of relativity for the last 50 years. \nProfessor Hans-Joachim Blome was a research fellow at the Institute for Astrophysics\, University of Bonn\, and at DLR for many years. As professor at FH Aachen – University of Applied Sciences\, he taught and researched at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering until 2016. His work focuses on gravitational physics\, the dynamics of space flight and cosmology. Not only does the landing stand as unique testimony to the pioneering US-American spirit and the daredevil astronauts who took part\, it was also made possible by a team of German rocket engineers who relocated to the United States with Wernher von Braun after the Second World War\, where they transformed Kennedy’s fearless vision of a Moon landing into a triumphant success with their Saturn V rockets. This talk is a glimpse behind the scenes: how was it possible\, despite minimal experience and in just eight years\, to build a rocket that voyaged to the Moon on nine occasions? Which difficulties and setbacks did the German rocket team have to overcome? How did they experience the race against the Soviets? Breathtaking\, visionary achievements\, hair-raising workarounds and an appetite for risk that would be virtually inconceivable today shaped the Apollo years in the history of aerospace. What was the secret to their success? What were the distinctive features of the individual Apollo missions? And how did the Apollo programme change the world? \nHildegard Werth is a television journalist and author. She is known to a wider audience as the veteran science correspondent for the ZDF heute journal news show. She has been reporting on an array of topics from the worlds of natural sciences\, technology and medicine for more than 30 years. Among her particular specialities are aerospace and astronomy. She is the author of numerous documentaries about aerospace history for ZDF\, 3SAT and PHOENIX. In case you wish to be waitlisted\, please send an email to Rebecca.Bartkowski@dlr.de. \n1. The Moon from antiquity to presence \nPeople have been fascinated by the Moon since they first gazed at the sky. The changing shape over the course of its phases\, its dominant role as nocturnal orb and the interspersed light and dark patches across its surface have quickened the imagination and inspired many peoples to worship it as the ‘Divine Moon’. We owe the creation of the first calendar to the Moon as well. Research into Earth’s satellite began with the invention of the first telescope in the early 17th century. Increasingly precise maps of its surface and a growing understanding of its structure ultimately produced the modern image of our planet’s companion. Then came space travel with its orbiters and the first landing of a crewed spacecraft on the Moon’s surface. Yet despite modern scientific insight into our cosmic companion\, many people still perceive the Moon as deeply mysterious. Why? Listen to the talk by Professor Seggewiß and find out.
