DESCRIPTION:Picture: NASA \n2. From Neil Armstrong to Harrison Schmitt ‒ the Apollo moon landing missions \nPlease note that all lectures of the 2019 Astroseminar are fully booked. Registration is no longer possible at this point. In case you wish to be waitlisted\, please send an email to Rebecca.Bartkowski@dlr.de. \n+++ Alternative Date: 8 may 2019 10:00 to 12:00 a.m. at Karl Rahner Akademie\, Jabachstraße 4-8\, 50676 Köln +++ \nAerospace enthusiasts the world over will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first crewed Moon landing in July 2019. Not only does the landing stand as unique testimony to the pioneering US-American spirit and the daredevil astronauts who took part\, it was also made possible by a team of German rocket engineers who relocated to the United States with Wernher von Braun after the Second World War\, where they transformed Kennedy’s fearless vision of a Moon landing into a triumphant success with their Saturn V rockets. This talk is a glimpse behind the scenes: how was it possible\, despite minimal experience and in just eight years\, to build a rocket that voyaged to the Moon on nine occasions? Which difficulties and setbacks did the German rocket team have to overcome? How did they experience the race against the Soviets? Breathtaking\, visionary achievements\, hair-raising workarounds and an appetite for risk that would be virtually inconceivable today shaped the Apollo years in the history of aerospace. What was the secret to their success? What were the distinctive features of the individual Apollo missions? And how did the Apollo programme change the world? \nHildegard Werth is a television journalist and author. She is known to a wider audience as the veteran science correspondent for the ZDF heute journal news show. She has been reporting on an array of topics from the worlds of natural sciences\, technology and medicine for more than 30 years. Among her particular specialities are aerospace and astronomy. She is the author of numerous documentaries about aerospace history for ZDF\, 3SAT and PHOENIX. She has received numerous prestigious accolades for her journalism\, among them the Universitas Prize for Science Journalism from the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation and the Medal for Natural Science Journalism from the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e.V. \nThe event will be held at the Air Force Conference Centre\, Wahn Air Force Base. Information on how to enter the Base complex and the parking facilities will be published ahead of the event on www.dlr.de. \nFor more information on the topic of the Astro Seminar\, please contact Dr Manfred Gaida.

In case you wish to be waitlisted\, please send an email to Rebecca.Bartkowski@dlr.de. \n1. The Moon from antiquity to presence \nPeople have been fascinated by the Moon since they first gazed at the sky. The changing shape over the course of its phases\, its dominant role as nocturnal orb and the interspersed light and dark patches across its surface have quickened the imagination and inspired many peoples to worship it as the ‘Divine Moon’. We owe the creation of the first calendar to the Moon as well. Research into Earth’s satellite began with the invention of the first telescope in the early 17th century. Increasingly precise maps of its surface and a growing understanding of its structure ultimately produced the modern image of our planet’s companion. Then came space travel with its orbiters and the first landing of a crewed spacecraft on the Moon’s surface. Yet despite modern scientific insight into our cosmic companion\, many people still perceive the Moon as deeply mysterious. Why? Listen to the talk by Professor Seggewiß and find out.

SUMMARY:{:de}Fachtagung WerkstoffPlus Auto 2019{:}{:en}Conference for New Vehicle and Material Concepts{:}
DESCRIPTION:New vehicle concepts for passenger and freight transport\, such as individual people movers\, autonomous small buses or modularized freight transport vehicles\, could be a better and more effcient way to address the mobility needs of the future. However\, these concepts will change the way vehicles are used and therefore alternate the requirements for materials and the construction techniques of vehicles. The competition to find the best architecture and structural solutions is still in full swing for for electric and fuel cell vehicles as well. \nOnce again\, continuing a well-established tradition\, the “WerkstoffPlus Auto” conference offers an excellent platform for science and industry to exchange ideas. Experts\, decision-makers and exhibitors from industry\, research and universities – who are aiming to advance new solutions for materials and materials technology at the interface between fundamental research and application – will be meeting for this purpose on February 20 – 21\, 2019 at the Maritim Hotel\, Stuttgart. \nRegistration link

SUMMARY:{:de}Symposium "Zusammenwirken von natürlicher und künstlicher Intelligenz"{:}{:en}‘Interaction Between Natural and Artificial Intelligence’ Symposium{:}
DESCRIPTION:Faced with progressive digitalisation\, how will people\, animals and plants live together with machines in the future? How will the interaction between natural and artificial intelligence evolve? Is it even possible to measure the scope and intensity of the new synergies?\nThe commission ‘Synergy and intelligence: technical\, ethical and legal challenges of interaction between living and non-living entities in an age of digitalisation (SYnENZ)’ at Braunschweigische Wissenschaftliche Gesellschaft (BWG) is investigating the forms of cohabitation that emerge from digital developments. The groups considers not only new types of communication and interaction between humans\, but also of cooperation between humans and other living or non-living entities. These interactions are associated with fundamental legal\, ethical and anthropological issues\, that will be presented and discussed during this first BWG Symposium. \nThree areas of responsibility will be elucidated:\n• Individuality and collectivity: will intensified communication and extended use of assistance systems lead to stronger cooperation and interdependence between individuals or collectives?\n• Individualisation and standardisation: in addition to beneficial influences\, does the extended interaction also present inherent risks of standardisation in human behaviour and personal development?\n• Autonomy and accountability: what are the consequences for autonomous human decision-making\, as well as for legal and moral accountability? \nThe significant complexity of these broad thematic fields will be addressed in three application areas: 1. in medicine and healthcare; 2. in physical and virtual forms of mobility; and 3. in the cooperation with livestock and plants within agriculture. The event will also address methodical-technical aspects\, e.g. the interaction between human and machine intelligence\, as well as collaboration by means of swarm intelligence. \nRegister here. \nKontakt: info@synenz.de \n

SUMMARY:{:de}UN/Deutschland High Level Forum: Wie gehts weiter nach UNISPACE+50 und Space2030?{:}{:en}UN/Deutschland High Level Forum: The way forward after UNISPACE+50 and on Space2030{:}
DESCRIPTION:The United Nations (UN) and Germany are co-organising a high-level forum (HLF) that will take place on 13–16 November 2018 at the UN Campus in Bonn. The HLF is the third event in this series\, which was initiated by the United Nations Office for Outer Space Affairs (UNOOSA) in 2016. The first two events took place in Dubai and were designed as a forum to present suggestions for the 50th anniversary of the UN Space Conference\, UNISPACE+50\, which took place in Vienna in June 2018. This year’s HLF is the first opportunity to discuss the implementation of the resolutions made at UNISPACE+50. \nThe event is designed to strengthen international dialogue on how aerospace technologies and applications can be used in the resolution of global challenges and for sustainable development. Senior figures from government and industry\, as well as from civil society\, will present practical examples. Representatives of each group will also seek to acquire a common understanding of how international collaboration in the field of aerospace can be focused more strongly on the global development agendas. \nThe HLF will bring together around 120 experts from national\, regional and international aerospace organisations operating in both the private and public sectors. Places are limited\, so participation is only possible upon confirmation by the organiser. Financial assistance will be provided to a restricted number of participants to enable them to attend the forum. \nInterested persons are invited to click on one of the following links to register: \n•  with financial assistance (closing date 02/09/2018)\n•  without financial assistance (closing date 01/10/2018) \nVisit the official site of the event for all further information\, including the agenda\, programme and contact details.

SUMMARY:{:de}25. Berliner EVA Konferenz: DIGITAL TWINS{:}{:en}25th Berlin EVA Conference: DIGITAL TWINS{:}
DESCRIPTION:The 25th Berlin EVA Conference (Electronic Media & Visual Arts) focuses on the seemingly dichotomous fields of our material cultural legacy and its virtual representation. So-called “digital twins” are transforming the world of curation\, scientific documentation and communication. They provide greater access to collections and innovative methods of visualisation and narration. As e-installations or streaming services\, these digital twins add longevity to performing arts and permit original sound experiences in digital concert halls. \nThe EVA conference will showcase the latest developments and practical applications for these fields in museums\, libraries\, archives and networks. The Poster Session will present real procedures\, innovative products and collaborative projects. \n

SUMMARY:{:de}„Da oben bewegt sich doch was…!“ – als Sterngucker dem Weltraumschrott auf der Spur{:}{:en}“There’s something moving out there…!” – tracking space debris as a stargazer{:}
DESCRIPTION:Some man-made objects in space – satellites and the International Space Station ISS in particular – are visible to the naked eye as twilight falls  and the Sun has set. But there’s plenty more moving up there! Well over three quarters of a million pieces of space debris circle the Earth\, all of which could cause severe damage if they collide with satellites or the ISS. Tracking space debris is of critical importance to increasing safety in space. \nThe Institute of Technical Physics at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) will open its doors to the research observatory for the monitoring of space debris during “Stuttgartnacht” on Saturday\, 20 October 2018. The facility is part of Schwäbische Sternwarte e.V. in Uhlandshöhe\, Stuttgart. Learn how DLR scientists use lasers to determine the trajectories of debris. What makes this research objective so special is the immense precision of their trajectory calculations\, determining the paths of debris within just a few metres from a remote location over 1000 kilometres away. The purpose is to ensure that highly effective evasive manoeuvres can be performed in orbit\, improving the ability to avoid collisions with space debris. \nWe look forward to welcoming you!

SUMMARY:{:de}DLR-Jahresempfang Paris{:}{:en}DLR Paris Annual Reception{:}
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is one of the biggest challenges faced by humankind. The decisions that we take today will determine the future of life on our planet. What can we do to fulfil this responsibility? Fundamental research\, new technologies and the detailed analysis of climate data can provide vital tools to address this global challenge. \nDLR’s core competencies can help to support the goals set by the COP21 Paris Climate Conference to reduce the risks and negative impacts of climate change. We are going to show how DLR is contributing to this as part of the new DLR 2030 Strategy and we are looking forward to fruitful discussions at the 2018 annual reception DLR and German Embassy in Paris.

SUMMARY:{:de}Vom virtuellen Produkt zum digitalen Zwilling – Faserverbundleichtbau 4.0{:}{:en}From the virtual product to the digital twin – Composite Structures 4.0{:}
DESCRIPTION:Speakers from SAP\, Airbus\, Premium AEROTEC\, Lufthansa Technik and the ARK Group will attend the conference to report on the current state of industrial digitalisation and on the latest projects. Nine talks organised in cooperation with researchers from the DLR Institute of Composite Structures and Adaptive Systems will provide a detailed overview of the current possibilities and future challenges that digitalisation presents for composite structures. \nHow can the new tools and opportunities offered by sensor technology\, automation\, data availability and data analysis be used in such a way that people will be enabled to make the right decisions efficiently in a complex production environment? This question extends far beyond potential applications for composite structures\, and the answers will be tested as prototypes during Science Day. \nRounding off the event\, there will be a demonstration of various applications that the Institute has developed in collaboration with partners in the field of virtual products and digital twins for manufacturing facilities and lightweight structures. \nProgramme -> \nRegistration -> \n
