SUMMARY:{:de}4. Fortbildung für Lehrkräfte VBIO-NRW: Ökosystem Erde: Mensch-Umwelt-Interaktion im 21. Jahrhundert{:}{:en}4th advanced training course for teachers VBIO-NRW: Ecosystem Earth: Human-Environment Interaction in the 21st Century{:}
DESCRIPTION:Training for teachers VBIO-NRW: Ecosystem Earth: Human-environment interaction in the 21st century \nOn 8 March 2025\, the 4th VBIO-NRW training course will take place in Cologne in cooperation with the German Physiological Society (DPG)\, the Society for Ecology (GfÖ) and the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine. Various lectures on the effects of environmental stressors will be held at the aerospace medicine research facility :envihab. The participants will then develop teaching materials and discuss them. \nThe content of the event: \nIn the age of the Anthropocene\, we have to deal with many environmental changes caused by humans that have significant consequences for biological\, geological and atmospheric processes on Earth. New technologies and the view from space enable us to detect changes and demonstrate the effects of environmental stressors. The lectures will look at a number of phenomena by way of example: the enormous performance of birds during their migrations\, for example\, and how forest ecosystems in Central Europe are managed and the consequences this has for biodiversity. The effects on humans are also considered\, as they are subject to the influence of a variety of environmental factors throughout their lives and react to these with their own regulatory mechanisms\, but also with illness. \nRegistration and further information

SUMMARY:{:de}9. Humanphysiologischer Workshop{:}{:en}9th Human Physiology Workshop{:}
DESCRIPTION:The Human Physiology Workshop (HPW) is targeted to young investigators with the aim to provide a forum where they can present and discuss ‘fresh’ topics and data. HPW meetings are meant to stimulate discussion\, and to provide the opportunity to learn more about the different organ systems of human body\, and how they interact with each other. The ultimate objective is to support a research network that can train and educate researchers in the field of human physiology. \n  \nRelevant topics include but are not limited to: \n\nAerospace medicineExtreme environments\nExercise and training\nStressors and behavior\n\nBackground: Humans have evolved as a physically active species in the gravitational field of the Earth. As a consequence\, our bodies require a relatively high amount of physical activity and mechanical loading\, and these stimuli are essential for health. Humans have also demonstrated that they can adapt to a wide range of climates and habitats\, ranging from polar conditions to the tropical zones\, from sub-aquatic to high altitude environments and even to space. These adaptive responses generally affect the human body as an integrated system\, and specific diseases\, where a certain adaptive mechanism is disrupted can be provide a deepened insight into the systems physiology and systems biology of the human body.

SUMMARY:{:de}6. KNIMS-Jahrestagung: Kompetenznetzwerk Immobilisationsbedingte Muskelstörungen{:}{:en}6th KNIMS Annual Conference: Competence network for immobilisation-related muscle disorders{:}
DESCRIPTION:In the Competence Network Immobilisation-Related Muscle Disorders\, we research and treat muscle disorders caused by immobilisation. With the annual conference of the Competence Network for Immobilisation-Related Muscle Disorders\, we bring together practising physicians and scientists and offer a platform for the exchange of information on the diagnosis and treatment of immobilisation-related muscle disorders. \nMuscle atrophy and weakness are a problem area of growing importance in medicine. In many cases\, lack of exercise and lack of training measures are contributory causes. The aim of the KNIMS network and its events is to connect clinicians working in science and practice with basic researchers and to provide a platform for dialogue.

SUMMARY:{:de}Werkstoff-Kolloquium 2018: Effiziente Energiewandlung und -speicherung{:}{:en}Materials Colloquium 2018: Efficient energy conversion and storage{:}
DESCRIPTION:The DLR Institute of Materials Research invites you to attend this year’s Materials Colloquium in Cologne. \nCreating a sustainable energy supply is among the most crucial societal challenges of our age. Problems associated with climate change\, such as this year’s extraordinarily hot summer\, paint a disconcerting picture of things to come. The research community is therefore called upon to prioritise the development of safe\, green and efficient concepts for safeguarding our energy supply. In this regard\, it is necessary to consider the entire energy chain from production\, conversion and storage through to utilisation. Especially within the framework of the Energy Transition\, the issues surrounding a reliable energy supply are becoming increasingly complex. A solution that focuses on a single technology\, such as nuclear power introduced in the 1970s\, is inconceivable today. Instead\, the requirements for research and innovation are increasingly diverse. Forward-looking approaches such as interdisciplinary connections between energy and transport\, as well as digitalisation tools are becoming increasingly important. Such interactions present major opportunities\, but also give rise to significant challenges. Accordingly\, wide-ranging research projects are therefore a matter of necessity\, in order to guarantee a reliable and sustainable energy supply for the future. \nThe development of new materials is pivotal within this framework. Important advances need to be made to increase efficiency and optimise current systems\, as well as to carry out new and innovative projects. The Institute of Materials Research conducts extensive research into efficient energy conversion and storage\, and thereby actively contributes to the success of the Energy Transition. \nWe would like to use this year’s Energy Colloquium to present to you our material and concept/system developments in the field of energy. In addition to showcasing research and development projects on a wide variety of  materials\, there will also be opportunities to discuss the diversity of their potential uses.

SUMMARY:{:de}21. Kölner Sonnenkolloquium{:}{:en}Twenty-first Cologne Solar Colloquium{:}
DESCRIPTION:Picture: STEAG \n  \nOnce a year\, the DLR Institute of Solar Research invites experts and interested researchers\, industry representatives and government representatives to the Cologne Solar Colloquium at DLR’s Cologne headquarters. At this concentrating solar technologies scientific colloquium\, DLR scientists and their cooperation partners\, together with industry experts\, present the latest research and development findings for an annually changing topic. \nWith over 100 participants\, the event is the largest German-speaking industry event for solar thermal power plant technologies. The colloquium provides speakers and participants with a forum for professional exchange\, stimulating discussions and the development of networks. \nThe focus of the 2018 Solar Colloquium is ‘more electricity from the Sun – intelligent operating and maintenance procedures in the solar thermal power plant’. \nExperience from solar thermal and conventional power stations shows that the performance of critical components and the entire process must be regularly reviewed and corrected to safeguard yields throughout the service life of the power plant. Research institutions and companies in the solar thermal power plant industry are therefore working on new procedures for operational monitoring and maintenance. The speakers at this year’s solar colloquium will provide insights into the latest development work in this area.\nAfter the presentation\, attendees will have the opportunity to visit the research facilities at the DLR Institutes of Solar Research and of Engineering Thermodynamics. \nRegistration deadline: 24 June 2018.
