DESCRIPTION:On Thursday\, 16 January 2025 at 14:15 h our next institute seminar will take place with a guest from Japan. \nSpeaker: Dr Tetsuo Yoshimitsu / JAXA \n\nTitel: 20 MINUTES OF ATTENTION: SLIM’S LUNAR LANDING CHALLENGE \n\n\nIn 2023\, Japan launched a remarkable mission with the deployment of the lunar lander SLIM. On January 19\, 2024\, SLIM successfully touched down on the lunar surface\, marking a significant milestone in the nation’s space exploration history. Despite not achieving a perfect landing position\, the lander remained functional for several months\, showcasing its robustness and reliability. \n\n\nA particular highlight of the mission was the deployment of LEV-1\, Japan’s first lunar rover. This small\, fully autonomous rover\, equipped with a hopping mechanism\, was released a few meters above the lunar surface shortly before SLIM’s landing. During its two-hour mission\, LEV-1 executed seven successful hops\, navigated the challenging lunar terrain\, and transmitted valuable data back to Earth. \n\n\nDr. Tetsuo Yoshimitsu of the Japanese Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) will discuss the autonomous capabilities and operational outcomes of the LEV-1 rover. DESCRIPTION:MASCOT is a 30 cm x 30 cm x 20 cm small lander that was deployed onto the surface of asteroid Ryugu in October 2018 by JAXA’s Hayabusa2 mission. There\, it operated for 17 hours and collected valuable data using its camera\, radiometer and magnetometer. This network should allow astronauts and objects to communicate with each other without being disturbed by other signals. It consists of seven wireless modules designed to help determine the position of objects and astronauts and monitor their movements. In addition\, the experiment should use the energy from artificial light sources in order to be carried out efficiently. It is examined whether the network is suitable for monitoring environmental parameters within the ISS module and whether it can also be operated with radiation effects and energy harvesting. DESCRIPTION:ESA’s Hera  is the first mission to validate asteroid deflection together with NASA’s DART spacecraft. Its target asteroid Dimorphos poses no threat to the Earth\, it was subject to a hypervelocity impact by DART in 2022. The main objectives of Hera are related to the retrieval of scientific information about the physical and dynamical properties after the impact so as to validate numerical impact codes. This will allow scientists and engineers to design and prepare for a real deflection mission should it be needed. As bonus\, Hera will unveil unique information about the internal structure of Dimorphos providing missing clues about the formation processes of binary asteroids. DESCRIPTION:Argonaut ist ein Projekt im ESA-Explorationsprogramm\, das ein Jahrzehnt nach den ersten ernsthaften Vorschlägen endlich Europa einen Zugang zur Mondoberfläche ermöglichen soll. Es ist als vielseitiges\, modulares Konzept im November 2022 von den ESA-Mitgliedsstaaten mit moderaten finanziellen Mitteln versehen worden. Die Module sind eine universelle Landestufe\, die bei jeder der bis zu 5 Argonaut Missionen pro Jahrzehnt zum Einsatz kommt. Die eigentliche Nutzlast kann entweder eine Lieferung von Ersatzteilen für das Artemis Basecamp\, ein Rover\, ein Solarkraftwerk oder eine In-Situ Labor sein. Ein flexibler Adapter zwischen dem Lande- und Nutzlastmodul sorgt für die Anpassung der mechanischen\, strukturellen\, elektrischen und thermischen Schnittstelle.
