Not only does the landing stand as unique testimony to the pioneering US-American spirit and the daredevil astronauts who took part\, it was also made possible by a team of German rocket engineers who relocated to the United States with Wernher von Braun after the Second World War\, where they transformed Kennedy’s fearless vision of a Moon landing into a triumphant success with their Saturn V rockets. This talk is a glimpse behind the scenes: how was it possible\, despite minimal experience and in just eight years\, to build a rocket that voyaged to the Moon on nine occasions? Which difficulties and setbacks did the German rocket team have to overcome? How did they experience the race against the Soviets? Breathtaking\, visionary achievements\, hair-raising workarounds and an appetite for risk that would be virtually inconceivable today shaped the Apollo years in the history of aerospace. What was the secret to their success? What were the distinctive features of the individual Apollo missions? And how did the Apollo programme change the world? \nHildegard Werth is a television journalist and author. She is known to a wider audience as the veteran science correspondent for the ZDF heute journal news show. She has been reporting on an array of topics from the worlds of natural sciences\, technology and medicine for more than 30 years. Among her particular specialities are aerospace and astronomy. She is the author of numerous documentaries about aerospace history for ZDF\, 3SAT and PHOENIX. She has received numerous prestigious accolades for her journalism\, among them the Universitas Prize for Science Journalism from the Hanns Martin Schleyer Foundation and the Medal for Natural Science Journalism from the Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft e.V. \nThe event will be held at the Air Force Conference Centre\, Wahn Air Force Base. The Moon from antiquity to presence \nPeople have been fascinated by the Moon since they first gazed at the sky. The changing shape over the course of its phases\, its dominant role as nocturnal orb and the interspersed light and dark patches across its surface have quickened the imagination and inspired many peoples to worship it as the ‘Divine Moon’. We owe the creation of the first calendar to the Moon as well. Research into Earth’s satellite began with the invention of the first telescope in the early 17th century. Increasingly precise maps of its surface and a growing understanding of its structure ultimately produced the modern image of our planet’s companion. Then came space travel with its orbiters and the first landing of a crewed spacecraft on the Moon’s surface. Yet despite modern scientific insight into our cosmic companion\, many people still perceive the Moon as deeply mysterious. Why? No further registration. +++ \nHans-Joachim Blome\, Aachen University of Applied Sciences \n 15 May 2018 \nWe are children of the Universe\, as the matter contained in our bodies originates from the stars and the Big Bang. Neither the atoms nor molecules from which we are built existed in the early days of the formation of the Universe; instead they emerged over billions of years from the interior of stars – from the fusion of hydrogen and helium – the only elements that did exist from the beginning. Countless supernova explosions released heavy elements into the Universe as a basic condition for the emergence of planetary systems and the development of life on Earth or other extrasolar planets. We inhabit the cosmic oasis called Earth. The minimum requirements needed for its emergence was the Universe itself\, which today extends into distant extragalactic reaches. \nThe macrocosm is only accessible indirectly using telescopes and detectors that probe its information carriers such as electromagnetic radiation\, gravitational waves\, neutrinos and cosmic particles. Natural laws and the limited human lifespan place restrictions on astronaut expeditions beyond Mars and into the interstellar space of our galaxy. Human beings are also unable to directly penetrate the world of atoms and elementary particles. Instead\, (sub)-atomic objects and structures can only be detected using scanning tunnelling microscopes and particle accelerators. Our living realm\, the ‘mesocosm’ of low speeds\, weak gravitational fields and tangible matter\, is described by classic physics. But quantum theory and the general theory of relativity have shown that the terms and natural laws of the mesocosm are inadequate to understand the atomic and extragalactic reality. That humankind has managed to enter the extragalactic and (sub)-atomic worlds\, both instrumentally and descriptively\, is one of the most astonishing achievements\, a process that has lasted from the age of Kepler\, Galilei and Newton to the present day. In the words of Hoimar von Ditfurth: “Natural science can also be described as the process that enables humankind to cast off the shackles of its anthropocentric perception of the world.” \nHans-Joachim Blome was a longstanding research associate at the Institute for Astrophysics\, University of Bonn\, and at DLR. He has been Professor at the Aachen University of Applied Sciences since 1999\, where he has carried out research and teaches in the field of space technology. No further registration.  +++ \nClaus Kiefer\, University of Cologne \n8 May 2018\nDoes the Universe have a beginning or an end? Does it possess spatial limits? Is there one world\, or many? This talk will seek to find answers to questions from the perspective of modern physics and astronomy. It will touch on a theoretical description of the general theory of relativity and quantum physics\, as well as on observations acquired from experiments. On this trip through the Universe in its entirety\, you will encounter exciting things like dark energy\, dark matter\, the Big Bang and the wave function of the Universe. The journey will take you from secure and established knowledge to the outer reaches of current research. \nProfessor Kiefer sat on the board of the German Physics Society (DPG; Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft) from 2012 to 2014. No further registration.  +++ \nProf. Dr. Jürgen Stutzki\, Cologne University                                                                      \n17 April 2017 \nThe atomic and molecular properties of baryonic matter affect the astrophysical processes unfolding in the Universe. They determine the energy levels\, the possible reactions between nuclei\, atoms and molecules and the energy exchange between matter and the radiation field in many ways. The Universe would look very different from what it does today if the atoms and molecules in it possessed different properties. \nThe talk draws on a number of examples on a macrophysical scale to explain these contextualities between random boundary conditions and the consequent properties that define the Universe that we observe around us. \nJürgen Stutzki is Professor and Chair at the Institute of Physics\, University of Cologne. Professor Stutzki’s research focuses on infrared and molecular astronomy. DESCRIPTION:Picture: NASA \nGisela Anton\, University of Erlangen-Nuremberg \n10 April 2018 \nParticle physics investigates the miniscule building blocks that exist in the Universe and the forces that determine their interactions to allow larger structures to form from elementary particles. These elementary particles in nature’s construction kit\, what is known as the Standard Model of particle physics\, were identified over the course of the last hundred years.The last major discovery in this field demonstrated the existence of the Higgs particle in the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in 2012. Neutrino physics is another area currently developing new insight into the smallest building blocks. Although neutrinos are the lightest of all elementary particles\, their mass is not zero\, producing astonishing consequences\, for instance neutrino oscillation. The talk will provide glimpses into current knowledge and offer an outlook for future developments in particle physics. \nProfessor Anton holds the Chair of Particle and Astro particle physics at the University of Erlangen-Nuremberg. No further registration.  +++ \nProf. Dr. Harald Lesch\, Munich University                            \n5 April 2018 \nEverything new is born from chaos. New properties in natural systems can only come about through irreversible changes. This irreversibility is one of the key elements in nature. No two moments are the same\, and each macroscopic system is unique.  Our perception of the cosmos having universal and unchangeable laws that apply to everything in nature is erroneous. Nature is an irreversible system engaged in a continuous process of self-organisation\, whose laws we understand in broad outlines\, but whose interaction with continuously changing conditions forces us to discover entirely new perspectives. The idea of strict causality\, hatched in the determinist days of the 19th and 20th centuries\, has bequeathed us industrialisation and global environmental catastrophes that have resulted in terms such as Anthropocene\, climate change and resource depletion. Physics especially\, as the foundation of all natural sciences\, began to develop a marginally causal\, only partially deterministic\, systemic/organic perception of nature and its relationship to and with humankind a long time ago.
