SUMMARY:4th International Workshop on Carnot Batteries
DESCRIPTION:Welcome to the 4th International Workshop on Carnot Batteries!\n\n\n\n\nThe challenge of solving the energy storage issue is a significant one for our society. Integrating intermittent sources of electric power from renewable energies into the future energy infrastructure requires gigawatt-hour storage capacities. \nThe cost-effective and site-independent storage of electrical energy at the scale of a large city’s daily consumption is crucial for the integration of renewable energy into a sustainable future energy system. The isentropic energy storage system technology shows promise in addressing this challenge. Carnot batteries are a developing technology for cost-effective and location-independent storage of electric energy at a gigawatt-hour scale. Also known as Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage (PTES)\, Pumped Heat Electricity Storage (PHES)\, or Electro-Thermal Energy Storage (ETES)\, a Carnot Battery converts electricity into heat\, stores the heat in low-cost storage media such as water or molten salt\, and converts the heat back to electricity when needed. More economically and environmentally friendly than conventional batteries\, Carnot Batteries have the potential to solve the global storage problem for renewable electricity. \nThe technology of the Carnot Battery has been subject to intensive energy research over the last few years. There are many international research activities on a theoretical and experimental level\, and several concepts for Carnot batteries have been proposed. The growing interest in this technology is also evident in the establishment of the IEA Storage Annex 36 ‚Carnot Batteries‘. \nThe 4th International Workshop on Carnot batteries will convene energy storage experts\, with a particular focus on thermal energy storage\, to discuss the latest research and demonstration of Carnot batteries. The two-day lecture programme will provide a comprehensive overview of innovative research approaches\, covering various Carnot battery concepts\, their demonstration\, and integration into the power grid and sector coupling. Speakers from both science and industry have already confirmed their participation. The workshop is an international platform for the presentation and international visibility of the latest results in Carnot battery research. \nWe will be happy to welcome you @Stuttgart! \n \nAt a glance\nDate: The 4th International Workshop on\nCarnot Batteries\, jointly organised by KIT\,\nUniversity of Stuttgart and DLR\, will take place in \nStuttgart from 23-25 September 2024 \nCall for Abstracts: If you are submitting an abstract\,\nplease read all the information under ‚Call for Abstracts‚ first. \nImportant Deadlines \n\n\n\nAbstract submission opens\n01 February 2024\n\n\nAbstract Submission deadline\n15 April 2024\n\n\nResults of the abstract review notified to authors\nby June 2024\n\n\nFinal conference registration for all presenters

SUMMARY:3rd International Workshop on Carnot Batteries
DESCRIPTION:The 3rd International Workshop On Carnot Batteries jointly organized by KIT\, University Stuttgart and DLR will be held\nin Stuttgart on September 27-28\, 2022. \nThe solution of the energy storage issue is an outstanding challenge to our society. The integration of intermittent sources of electric power from renewable energies into the future energy infrastructure requires storage capacities in gigawatt hours. \nThe site-independent and at the same time\, inexpensive storage of electrical energy on the scale of the daily consumption of a large city is of existential importance worldwide for the integration of renewable energy into a sustainable energy system of the future. The technology of the isentropic energy storage system represents a promising approach to solve this issue. \nCarnot batteries are an emerging technology for the inexpensive and site-independent storage of electric energy at gigawatt hour scale. Also referred to as “Pumped Thermal Electricity Storage” (PTES)\, “Pumped Heat Electricity Storage” (PHES) or “Electro-Thermal Energy Storage” (ETES)\, a Carnot Battery transforms electricity into heat\, stores the heat in inexpensive storage media like water or molten salt and transforms the heat back to electricity when required. \nCarnot batteries have the potential to solve the global storage problem of renewable electricity in a more economic and environmentally friendly way than conventional batteries. \nThe technology of the Carnot battery has been subject to intensive energy research over the last few years. There are many international research activities on a theoretical and experimental level and several concepts for Carnot batteries have been proposed. The increasing interest in this technology is also reflected in the founding of the IEA Storage Annex 36 “Carnot Batteries”. \nThe 3rd International Workshop on Carnot batteries will bring together experts in energy storage\, in particular thermal energy storage\, to discuss the state of the art of research and demonstration of  Carnot batteries. \nIn a two-day lecture programme\, a broad overview of innovative research approaches will be provided\, and topics of different Carnot battery concepts and their demonstration and integration into the power grid and sector coupling will be addressed. Numerous participants from science and industry have already confirmed their participation (see list of speakers). The workshop serves as an international platform to present latest results in Carnot batteries research and make them internationally visible.
