MERLIN – the Methane Remote Sensing Lidar Mission – is a French-German cooperation project between the French space agency (CNES) and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). Together, they are jointly developing and operating a space-based system to measure methane sources and sinks. CNES is providing its ‘Myriade Evolutions’ satellite platform and satellite control centre. The main industrial contractor in France is Airbus, Toulouse. DLR is supplying the IPDA LIDAR instrument (IDPA: Integrated Path Differential Absorption; LIDAR: Light Detecting and Ranging). The main industrial contractor in Germany is Airbus, Munich. CNES is responsible for the mission management and will operate the satellite.
