HANNOVER MESSE Tech Transfer Conference Stage
The security of space-based infrastructure
Monday 17 April 2023, 15:45 – 16:40
Keynote with Professor Felix Huber, Director of DLR Space Operations and Astronaut Training
Simulations show that a day without space-based services such as communication, navigation, Earth observation, reconnaissance would have serious consequences for our modern lives. This keynote presentation will highlight which components of space systems are particularly vulnerable, how to make them more resilient, or how to replace them on a limited short-term basis in the event of a failure. The critical components in the space, ground and launch segments will be briefly discussed. The resulting task of comprehensive security provision can only be accomplished efficiently by governmental and non-governmental actors (industry, academia, large-scale research) working together.
Quantum technology in orbit: Progress and utilisation
Monday 17 April 2023, 16:45 – 17:40
Keynote with Dr Lisa Wörner, Director of the DLR Institute of Quantum Technologies
Quantum technologies have high potential for application in many fields. For example, they can be used to better measure magnetic and gravitational fields, establish secure communications, and measure time more accurately. Many of these applications are especially useful in orbit. Gravitational field measurements from orbit, for example, can improve the data collected on, and thus the monitoring of, climate change. Similar benefits apply to the magnetometers that allow for the monitoring of space weather. There is also the global communications and navigation systems that we all use every day. While the latter already relies on quantum effects, secure communications require additional, orbital infrastructure. Overall, quantum technologies are already being used in orbit for research and development, leading to the development of new sensors for use on the ground or in space. It should be emphasised that these technologies are also suitable for space exploration in general, such as the exploration of planets and moons.
