ALICIA

Digital assessment platform for the entire aviation system

How can aviation be climate-compatible and at the same time enable air transport for all? Which new aircraft technologies and operational procedures are necessary for this? How great is the need for renewable energy sources and sustainable aviation fuels?

As part of the ALICIA project, the German Aerospace Center (DLR) is conducting research to answer these pressing questions. ALICIA, short for ‘Aviation Life Cycle and Impact Assessment’, is a new type of digital assessment platform that DLR is using to support industry and policymakers in making relevant decisions about the future. This enables the analysis of different scenarios and their effects, including meaningful climate impact, energy demand and value creation indicators over the entire life cycle. An interactive dashboard makes complex interrelationships understandable and visualises the effects of revolutionary technologies and innovative flight operation procedures, for example.

In the ALICIA project, DLR is combining expertise and research data from various disciplines. The evaluation methodology is based on the latest scientific findings and integrates data from simulation models to flight experiments. In doing so, the researchers ensure that both the short-term and long-term effects on the performance and sustainability of the air transport system are taken into account. The life cycle and impact assessment performed with the ALICIA platform provide detailed insights into the climate and environmental impact of aviation. In this way, DLR is making an important contribution to the design of climate-compatible and economical aviation.

To pave the way for climate-friendly aviation, the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action and the Federal Ministry for Digital and Transport have set up the ‘Working Group on Climate-Neutral Aviation’ in collaboration with industry, trade unions and associations. In this group, ALICIA was used for the first time to evaluate the technologies and measures discussed to determine the potential for reducing the climate impact of carbon dioxide emissions and non-carbon dioxide effects. The results will be presented at ILA Berlin 2024.

At the DLR stand at ILA Berlin 2024, visitors can find out more about current research into the climate-friendly aviation of tomorrow. They will see and experience the interactive dashboard together with a digital globe. In addition to the scenario analyses on the dashboard, interested parties can discover scenarios for future air traffic, optimised flight routes and climate-compatible aircraft concepts on the digital globe.
