Future Fighter Demonstrator (DLR-FFD)

The Future Fighter Demonstrator is a concept study of a modern, highly agile next-generation fighter aircraft

As part of DLR’s defence research into military aircraft, the DLR-funded Diabolo project is developing technologies and processes for a next-generation fighter configuration. In developing the technology, researchers are looking at the entire spectrum of crewed and semi-autonomous configurations. The focus is on the design of a generic Future Fighter Demonstrator (DLR-FFD), which will be used to fill current gaps in technology and demonstrate the design and evaluation capability of DLR’s methods and processes.

The basis for the DLR-FFD design is a catalogue of requirements agreed with the German Federal Ministry of Defence (BMVg) for a future German fighter aircraft. The design result will lead to a fighter aircraft in the size class of a Lockheed F-22. Specific features include internal weapon bays, so-called ‘bump’ inlets for separating the boundary layers at the engine duct inlet and the engine design.
