Experience Earth observation

Over 10,000 satellites are orbiting Earth – and the number is growing. Communication, navigation, live broadcasts, the European electricity grid, and even stock exchange trading depend on these artificial celestial bodies. Science and environmental observation now only account for a small proportion of the satellites. Yet, there is no alternative to Earth observation satellites. They alone can continuously provide a global, objective view of our Earth. Data from Earth observation satellites not only show how our environment and climate are changing – above all, they also provide the basis for addressing these challenges and helping our society to adapt. What is the state of our forests, our water bodies, and the air in our cities? Where can and must we take technical or organisational countermeasures? Where can we use solar, wind or bioenergy? Images acquired from space help us find solutions for the profound social changes to come. The exhibit allows the visitors to immerse themselves in the fascinating field of Earth observation using virtual reality and get an insight into the diverse technological possibilities. Through its institutes, DLR has unique systems expertise that allows the researchers to consider and develop all components together, from the conception, planning and execution of a mission to data reception, data processing and scientific analysis and information generation.
