Experience research data from Mars in virtual reality
What does it feel like to fly over Mars or Earth in virtual reality (VR) using your own body? The DLR_School_Lab Berlin – one of our 17 school laboratories – invites visitors to immerse themselves in fascinating virtual 3D landscapes. Equipped with a VR headset and a specially designed ‘flight device’, they can move intuitively through detailed digital worlds and experience research data in a remarkable way.
The landscapes on display are based on real research data from Earth and planetary observation. These include high-resolution images of Mars captured by a camera developed by us. The measurement data is used to create realistic three-dimensional models, providing a unique insight into the surface of our neighbouring planet.
This experience is made possible by visualisation software developed by us, which translates scientific data into interactive virtual environments. Visitors can explore for themselves how modern space research is conducted and discover the information contained in image and terrain data. The exhibit combines the latest research with innovative VR technology, demonstrating how complex scientific data can be made understandable and immediately accessible.
