Hologram generator brings space exploration to life
Holograms reveal what would otherwise remain hidden from the naked eye. These three-dimensional images suspended in space allow us, for example, to immerse ourselves in the inner workings of future technologies in ways we could never otherwise see. Animations float before us, so lifelike that it is hard to believe they are nothing more than light. In the German Space Agency at DLR’s new hologram generator, these animations show us what would happen if satellites failed, how the Galileo satellite navigation system works or how the European Launcher Challenge is making new launch vehicles possible across Europe.
This allows major European space projects with significant German involvement to be explained in three dimensions, making them easier to understand than ‘conventional’ videos. The display can be viewed from all four sides and is one of the largest mixed reality displays ever built. It was developed specifically for events at trade fairs and other high-traffic locations. The project was funded by the Federal Ministry of Research, Technology and Space (BMFTR).
