More durable fuel cells for heavy-duty transport

In the PEMTASTIC research and development project, we are working with industry and research collaborators to significantly increase the lifespan of membrane electrode assemblies (MEAs) in fuel cells. The focus is on applications in heavy-duty transport, where fuel cell systems are subject to intensive, continuous use and components are exposed to high stress. To improve their durability, we use a model-based design approach to achieve a particularly long-lasting MEA. We are using innovative materials specifically designed for operation at temperatures of up to 105 degrees Celsius.

Project developments are based on improved modelling to better understand the ageing processes of these components. Our researchers are also systematically investigating all relevant subcomponents of MEAs and the ways in which they interact. The aim is to further develop the innovative concept of a long-lasting, high-performance MEA up to technology readiness level (TRL) 4, paving the way for practical applications further down the line.
