1. The Moon from antiquity to presence

People have been fascinated by the Moon since they first gazed at the sky. The changing shape over the course of its phases, its dominant role as nocturnal orb and the interspersed light and dark patches across its surface have quickened the imagination and inspired many peoples to worship it as the ‘Divine Moon’. We owe the creation of the first calendar to the Moon as well. Research into Earth’s satellite began with the invention of the first telescope in the early 17th century. Increasingly precise maps of its surface and a growing understanding of its structure ultimately produced the modern image of our planet’s companion. Then came space travel with its orbiters and the first landing of a crewed spacecraft on the Moon’s surface. Yet despite modern scientific insight into our cosmic companion, many people still perceive the Moon as deeply mysterious. Why? Listen to the talk by Professor Seggewiß and find out.
