From 22 to 26 April 2024, leading companies and organisations from the fields of industry, research and academia will be presenting their solutions and technologies for a high-performance and sustainable industry at Hannover Messe. Under the motto “Energizing a Sustainable Industry”, more than 4000 exhibitors will be presenting their products and innovations to achieve climate neutrality through electrification, digitalisation and automation. This year, the focus will be on the following topics: Carbon-neutral production, Energy for Industry, Industry 4.0/Manufacturing-X, AI and machine learning as well as hydrogen and fuel cells.

The Hannover Messe programme brings together international experts from industry, academia and government at one of the world’s largest knowledge platforms.

The German Aerospace Center (DLR) is presenting technologies, innovations and transfer projects at Hannover Messe 2024 (Energy Solutions, Hall 13, D62) under the motto ‘Enabling transformation’. They are contributing to the trnaformation of the industry, energy and mobility sectors in a climate-friendly and economically successful way.

The decarbonisation of energy-intensive processes is one of the key challenges facing industry. Power-to-heat technologies utilise electricity from fluctuating, renewable sources such as the sun and wind. These provide process heat and steam in a climate-friendly, reliable and flexible way. In this context, DLR is showcasing a latent heat storage system based on nitrate salts to generate steam. Another exhibit illustrates a high-temperature heating system. It can heat gaseous heat media to up to 1200 degrees Celsius. Its core elements consist of inductively heated, electrically conductive ceramics.

In the field of hydrogen technology, DLR is demonstrating the best way to store and transport this energy carrier. An important factor here is to ensure the high quality of the hydrogen. The DLR stand will also feature a fuel cell system with a hydrogen tank. The system can be used as a mobile charging station for electric vehicles, especially in places where a powerful grid connection is not possible or too expensive.

Intelligent, digitally networked robots are of vital importance for the production of the future: visitors to the DLR stand will be able to experience a variable robot workstation in action. The central element is a lightweight robotic arm, which is able to independently position components and devices in the workspace and select suitable tools. The spin-off 3D Input will be presenting a miniaturised technology for innovative human-machine interfaces. The small sensor unit can also be integrated into mobile phones and tablets.

In the field of aviation, DLR will use the Airbrake to demonstrate the possibility of aircraft maintenance based on augmented reality, remote collaboration and a decentralised database (digital twin). The demonstration includes a structural health monitoring system for in-service inspection using ultrasonic waves. With a model of the Future Fighter Demonstrator (FFD), DLR also provides an insight into its defence research.

The DLR Quantum Computing Initiative shows how companies can participate in the development of applications for quantum computers.
