ILA Berlin is the largest aerospace trade show in the EU and will take place from 22 to 26 June 2022. It showcases the future of aerospace with a focus on innovation, new technologies and sustainability, as well as the future of climate-neutral flight and new mobility. The theme of the exhibition this year is: ‘Pioneering Aerospace for a safe, sustainable and connected world’. The European Commission is the strategic partner of ILA.

ARCHES robotic mission explores Etna ‘moonscape’
Saturday 25 June 2022, 12:30 CEST | In order to test mission scenarios for robotic exploration on Earth, before setting off for the Moon or Mars, researchers look for locations that come as close as possible to the conditions on an alien celestial body. From 13 June to 9 July 2022, Mount Etna on the Italian island of Sicily will become one such ‘moonscape’. The volcanic landscape, with its granular surface, earthquakes and solidified lava layers, closely resembles the geological make-up of Earth’s natural satellite.
In the DLR live stream, we will be broadcasting live from the Etna volcano in Sicily. There, near the summit, an elaborate demonstration of the ‘Autonomous Robotic Networks to Help Modern Societies (ARCHES)’ mission from the research field of robotic exploration will take place. Researchers are using the inhospitable environment of Mount Etna as a ‘lunar analogue’. A lander, two rovers and a drone will work together autonomously, exploring their surroundings, mapping them and performing other tasks. The project and the science behind it will be presented in the live broadcast.
Sustainable Aviation – DLR signs MoU with Dassault Systèmes
Future aircraft will need to be climate-neutral during operation, while being manufactured in a sustainable and energy-efficient manner. At ILA 2022, the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Dassault Systèmes with the goal of strengthening their cooperation in the area of digital development processes, and to accelerate the development and manufacturing processes of climate-neutral aircraft based on this. Dassault Systèmes’ 3DEXPERIENCE platform offers integrated design, engineering and simulation applications in a cloud-based collaborative solution to drive the transformation of aviation. DLR, with its 55 research institutes, is researching technologies and simulation tools for sustainable and climate-neutral air transport, from flight physics to production and operations.
DLR-Live-Stream: Glass wall studio
This year, for the first time, the DLR stand features a studio with glass walls. Through daily moderated talks with representatives from aerospace research, business and industry, DLR will provide an insight into current research topics and projects as well as missions. The discussions can be viewed on site and via the livestream on DLR’s YouTube channel.
Space Pavilion programme
Saturday, 25 June 2022, and Sunday, 26 June 2022, both between 10:00 CEST and 18:00 CEST. What do Earth observation satellites contribute to environmental and climate protection? What is space weather? How is space debris created and what can we do about it? What challenges will arise from future missions to the Moon or Mars? Experts will answer these and many other questions on stage in the Space Pavilion.
There is a 25-year gap between their missions – astronauts Matthias Maurer and Reinhold Ewald will report on their experiences in space. And of course there will also be a detailed review of Matthias Maurer’s ‘Cosmic Kiss’ mission and the cutting-edge experiments he conducted on the International Space Station ISS.
DLR is once again one of the largest institutional exhibitors in 2022. The DLR stand in Hall 6 (Stand 310) and the Space Pavilion and stand of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action (BMWK) in Hall 4 (Stand 230, ILA Future Lab) will provide a wide range of insights into current research work over an area of approximately 400 square metres. Four aircraft from DLR’s research fleet will be on display in the outdoor area of ILA, including, for the first time, the Dassault Falcon 2000LX ISTAR.
